On a buzzing Friday night in Toormina, the Bongil Bongil Youth Collective (BBYC) hosted a truly unforgettable evening — the Bongil Bongil Gala. Co-created and run by young people, the event was a vibrant celebration of youth voice and leadership, creative expression, and community connection.

The night brought together over a hundred community members for an alcohol-free evening full of music, moving speeches, and celebration — all led by the BBYC.

“This gala evening is a really exciting moment for us. It’s the first time we’re running an event as a youth collective in partnership with Uniting’s Becoming New programme and a number of amazing community partners.” – Eva Smith, Event Minister, BBYC

Performances from emerging young artists lit up the stage, with the likes of Lily Davis and Sam Melinz, Gumbaynggirr and Barkindji musician, Manduway Dutton and Tom Flanders and talented rapper, Isiaih Kelly. The Bongil Creators an initiative born out of a wonderful partnership with local production studio, Grow the Music also took the stage with heartwarming performances from a variety of young people.

While heartfelt storytelling and powerful reflections grounded the event in purpose, it was more than just a night of celebration, the Gala was a fundraiser for BBYC, with all proceeds going directly into youth-led projects, creative initiatives, and leadership opportunities designed and run by the BBYC.

“The BBYC is for young people, by young people from the 2452 area. It’s about leadership, connection and belonging.” – Jack Jones, Chair, BBYC

At Becoming U, we believe in amplifying the voices and visions of young people — and the Bongil Bongil Gala was a shining example of what happens when youth are supported to lead, create, and build their own futures.

We’re so proud to support initiatives like this that centre young people, creativity, and community.
