Swell (Noun):
1. A rhythmic and steady series of rolling waves on the ocean’s surface, driven by distant weather patterns, seismic activity, or tidal forces.
The Swell Project is dedicated to empowering young people aged 14-16 as they navigate the challenges inherent in this transitional period of their lives.
This phase is often characterised by a multitude of changes, including those beyond their control such as educational shifts, employment prospects, and evolving societal and family dynamics. Through our initiative, we offer a comprehensive approach tailored to individual needs, providing personalised frameworks designed to equip young people for success.
Swells are natural, inevitable patterns of movement that can be powerful and unpredictable, much like the challenges and changes that young people face in their lives. By framing our youth program around the analogy of a swell in the ocean, we can help young people develop the resilience, adaptability, and skills they need to navigate life’s ups and downs with confidence and grace.
Relationship-based Approach: Swell fosters trust and connection through local mentors deeply embedded within the community. These mentors co-design personalised plans with young people, guiding them towards short and long-term opportunities while leveraging the young person’s inherent resilience and strengths.
Adaptability and Flexibility: Drawing inspiration from the ebb and flow of ocean swells, the program focuses on the importance of adaptability when faced with inevitable challenges. Our young people are supported to set flexible goals, emphasising growth and learning over rigid outcomes.
Wrap-around Support: The project provides a robust support system, including weekly individual and group check-ins, BBYC volunteer opportunities for skill-building and community connection, tailored work experiences with local employers, and exploration of interests through involvement in BBYC subcommittees.
