Recently, the Strengthening Communities Alliance (SCA) ran a community survey in Toormina to better understand what “community strength” really means here in the 2452 region. The responses shine a light on what people value most, the challenges we face, and where we can grow together.

The SCA is a partnership of national organisations, community groups, and residents working together to make our region stronger, fairer, and more connected. By listening to community voices and acting on what matters most, the SCA supports local projects and initiatives that improve wellbeing, inclusion, and opportunities for everyone.

What We Heard

Belonging matters
The strongest theme was connection. People said that feeling welcome, supported, and accepted is the foundation of a strong community. Whether through neighbours helping each other out, community events, or youth programs, belonging came through as the heart of what people value.

Safety and inclusion are key
Many respondents talked about wanting safer spaces, especially for young people and families. This included both physical safety (like well-lit public spaces) and emotional safety (a culture of respect, acceptance, and inclusion).

Young people are leaders, not just participants
There was a clear message that youth should be supported to take on leadership roles in the community. Respondents highlighted that young people’s voices, creativity, and ideas are vital for shaping a thriving future in Toormina.

Services need to be accessible
Community members noted the importance of having local services and facilities that are easy to access — whether that’s transport, health support, or places to gather. Gaps in these areas can leave people feeling isolated.

Shared spaces bring us together
From parks to community halls, shared spaces were highlighted as essential for building connection. People want spaces that are welcoming, flexible, and inclusive, where all ages and groups can come together.

What This Means for us

The results show us that community strength isn’t just about infrastructure or programs — it’s about people. It’s about belonging, safety, inclusion, and making sure everyone has the chance to contribute and connect.

The Strengthening Communities Alliance will use these insights to shape future projects and priorities in the region. By acting on what matters most to locals, we can make our community an even stronger, more connected place to live.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to share your voice. Together, we’re building a community where everyone belongs and has the chance to thrive.
